Is it safe to travel to Kashmir?

Yes, travelling to Kashmir is absolutely safe. However, don’t be shocked by the abundance of military checkpoints, tanks on the side of the road, military trucks and heavy-armed soldiers roaming down the streets.

Yes! The internet is fully restored in Kashmir.

Travelling to some parts of Ladakh that lie close to the borders of China and Tibet do require a permit.

Ideally, at least a week would be needed to explore Kashmir and its hidden gems.

The distance between Kashmir and Delhi is approximately 842 kilometres. You can take a flight from New Delhi to Srinagar that will take around 1 hour and 25 minutes. While travelling via train will take you 7 hours and 25 minutes.

  • Winter (December to February): If you enjoy snow and winter sports, then visiting in winter is perfect. The snow-covered landscapes are breathtaking, and you can enjoy activities like skiing and snowboarding in Gulmarg.
  • Kashmir is known for its breathtaking landscapes and rich culture. Here are some must-visit places:
    1. Srinagar: Famous for its beautiful Dal Lake, houseboats, and Mughal gardens, Srinagar is the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.
    2. Gulmarg: Known for its stunning meadows and skiing opportunities, Gulmarg is a popular destination for adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers.
    3. Pahalgam: This picturesque town is ideal for trekking, fishing, and exploring the lush valleys. It’s also the starting point for the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage.
    4. Sonamarg: Known as the “Meadow of Gold,” Sonamarg offers breathtaking views and is a great spot for trekking and camping.
    5. Betaab Valley: Famous for its scenic beauty, this valley is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and lush green meadows, making it a perfect picnic spot.
    6. Kashmir Valley: Explore the stunning landscapes, traditional villages, and rich culture throughout the valley.
    7. Shankaracharya Temple: Located on a hilltop, this ancient temple offers panoramic views of Srinagar and the surrounding mountains.
    8. Tulip Garden: Visit the famous Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar during spring to see vibrant tulip blooms.

Snow in Kashmir typically falls during the winter months, from December to February. Here’s a breakdown:

    • December: Light snowfall begins in the higher reaches of the region, with temperatures dropping significantly. Srinagar and other lower areas may also see occasional snowfall.
    • January: This is usually the coldest month in Kashmir, with heavy snowfall in places like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg. The snow creates a beautiful winter landscape, attracting tourists for skiing and other winter sports.
    • February: Snowfall continues, although it may start to lessen towards the end of the month. The region remains wintery, making it a great time for winter activities.
